We packed a lot in to our sessions today. The morning group dug straight in to the WeDo lego and started building. Due to a shortage of pieces we had to get creative and I was proud of their resilience and willingness to solve problems. Not a small feat at 7:30 in the morning! The afternoon girls arrived as exuberant and chatty as ever! They were quite simply bursting with excitement. It so warms my heart when I see how enthusiastic they are when they come to class. We played with Bob (formally know as Dash made my Wonder Workshop); made some circuits using the Snap Circuit kit and built a Dunk Tank with our Goldieblox. We really have so much fun together and at 4:15 I can't quite believe it's nearly pack up time! I am so proud and blessed to work with these 17 young women! One day I hope they look back on this time together and remember they can be WHOEVER and WHATEVER they want to be. No limits. | |

Week 2 of Young Women Who Code involved an introduction to binary number. Jessica led them through an activity that explained bytes, bits and binary numbers and we played 'Guess the number' and the word. The students then wrote their own name in binary! Such fun!
Today during our time together, I and my 14 young women broke the ice with some interactive introductions! Who knew that Abby's favorite ice-cream was vanilla with peanut butter and that a lot of our young women preferred vanilla ice-cream (oh with a little bean in there). I think my going first might have influenced them though! After our introductions we did a 'Can You Draw It' activity. Click here for more details. Who says spotting bugs in programs and debugging them has to be done on a computer! Check out what our Unplugged Programmers did here! |
