Janet Couvillion was born in Northern Ireland in 1973. She attended Gilnahirk Primary School and Strathearn Grammar School. Upon completing her A-Levels, she traveled to Glasgow, Scotland and attended Strathclyde University where she graduated with an Upper Class Second degree in Business Law and Marketing.
She went on to work for Michelin and Coca-Cola before deciding to travel. Janet visited many countries in South East Asia before exploring Australia and the United States. Upon returning to the United Kingdom, she enrolled in the Post Graduate Certificate in Education program at Bath Spa University College. She taught for 4 years in the United Kingdom before emigrating to Austin, Texas with her husband and one year old boy, Joel. |
Janet was offered, and accepted, a position at Forest Trail Elementary in Eanes I.S.D. and taught in third grade for 3 1/2 years. Shortly after graduating from her Masters in Education as part of Eanes Partnership in Teacher Excellence Program, Janet accepted a position as Educational Technologist where she was highly effective in integrating technologies in to the elementary classroom.
During her time as an Ed. Tech. Janet started to become interested in how to introduce computer science at the elementary level. She started taking notice of gender inequality in the area of computer science and engineering. Early in her 12th year as an educator, Janet decided to live her new dream: empowering young women to know that they can be whoever they want to be. Hence the birth of Young Women Who Code
