As we departed on Day 2 I promised the kids I would blog tonight. I usually blog nightly during camps so families feel connected to what their kids are engaging with, but New Orleans has been so much fun my nights have been spent soaking up your great city with my husband, 8 year old and 3 year old boys. Monday morning seems like a long time ago (in a good way!) because we have packed so much in to our days. We have been innovating, creating and building and I hope to give you a good outline of what we have exploring since Monday at 9am. | |
First day of camp always brings with it great excitement for me. I couldn't wait to get myself to ASH, unload my materials and get to meet my campers. Your construction efforts, however, made the start a little more stressful than usual!#directionallychallenged
Once we got unpacked I headed down to meet the campers. What a wonderful group of children! I really can't say enough positive things about them. I have been teaching for over 13 years and this group of 30 has felt like a much smaller group. We have worked and played together so well.
Every morning we check in giving a number between 1-5 to represent how we feel. I am pleased to report we are usually a 1 (and even in to the negative numbers!). On Monday we did a Bingo card Icebreaker followed by a Pasta Creation based on this activity from The Lemelson Center. We stretched it a little further and came up with some very inspiring inventions! After this we explored Code.org and completed our first engineering challenge of the week, The Zipline Challenge! After lunch we came back to talk about our Claymation/Stop Motion Animation plan for the week. Exciting stuff! We finished off the day with a paperclip: If you were a paperclip, what would you be? Those creative juices were definitely flowing and we were ready to start Day 2!
